Dental Anxiety Is Real — And Very Common

Around one in two adults in the UK feels some anxiety about visiting the dentist, and roughly one in ten avoids it altogether. So if you've been putting off an appointment — for months, or even years — please know this is one of the most ordinary things we see, and not something to feel embarrassed about.

Anxiety usually comes from somewhere reasonable: an unkind experience in the past, a fear of pain, not liking the loss of control, or simply not knowing what's going to happen. None of those make you difficult or silly. They make you someone who'd benefit from a practice that takes the time to do things differently.

A gentle first step: your first visit can be just a chat and a look — no treatment, no pressure. We'll get to know you, you'll get to know us, and nothing happens until you're ready. Curious about cost? Our fees are clear and up front, so there are no surprises to worry about either.

Where You Sit on the Anxiety Spectrum

"Nervous patient" covers a wide range — from a mild flutter of nerves to a genuine phobia that's kept you away for years. Wherever you are on this scale, there's a comfortable way forward.

Level 1 — Mild Nerves

A Few Pre-Appointment Butterflies

You still attend, but you feel a bit tense in the waiting room or before a particular treatment. Knowing what's coming next, and being able to pause at any point, is usually enough to settle this completely.

Level 2 — Moderate Anxiety

You Dread It For Days Beforehand

The appointment plays on your mind, you might sleep badly the night before, and you may have cancelled once or twice. A slower pace, a clear plan, and a team that checks in with you makes a real difference here.

Level 3 — High Anxiety

You Avoid Booking Unless You Have To

You only go when something hurts, and even then it takes a push. Often there's a specific trigger — the needle, the drill, gagging, or being unable to stop. We build the visit around your trigger so it feels manageable.

Level 4 — Dental Phobia

It's Been Years — And That Feels Huge

The thought alone brings a strong physical reaction, and the longer it's been, the harder it feels to walk back in. This is more common than you'd think, and we see people in exactly this position regularly. The first visit is the hardest part — and we make it as small and kind as possible.

However long it's been, you will not be lectured. Our job isn't to make you feel bad about the gap — it's to help you take the next step, at whatever speed works for you. Read how we care for nervous patients, or simply call and tell us how you're feeling.

How Dental Anxiety Tends to Show Up

Anxiety doesn't look the same for everyone. You might recognise a few of these — and any of them is reason enough to choose a practice that goes gently:

  • Putting off booking — finding reasons to delay, or only going when something already hurts.
  • Trouble sleeping the night before — or the appointment sitting on your mind for days in advance.
  • A racing heart or churning stomach in the waiting room — your body reacting before anything has even happened.
  • Feeling tearful, shaky, or panicky in the chair — entirely understandable, and nothing to apologise for.
  • A strong gag reflex — which often gets worse the more anxious you feel, and which we can work around.
  • Dreading specific moments — the needle, the drill's sound, the smell, or the feeling of not being able to stop.
  • Avoiding the dentist for years — then worrying about being judged for how long it's been.
  • Feeling embarrassed about your teeth — which can make booking feel even harder, even though we've truly seen it all.

Recognise yourself here? That's the first step. Tell us you're a nervous patient when you book, and we'll plan your visit around it from the very start. New patients always welcome.

Why Dental Anxiety Happens

There's almost always a reason behind the fear — and understanding yours is the start of moving past it. Most nervous patients tell us it's one or two of these.

A Bad Past Experience

An appointment that hurt, a dentist who rushed you, or being made to feel silly as a child. These memories stick — but a calmer, kinder experience can genuinely rewrite them over time.

Fear of Pain

Often rooted in older dentistry. Modern numbing is far gentler and more effective than it used to be, and we never push on once you've told us something's uncomfortable.

Loss of Control

Lying back, unable to see or speak, with someone working in your mouth. We hand control back to you with a simple "raise your hand to pause" signal that we always honour.

Embarrassment

Worrying your teeth are "too far gone" or that you'll be judged for the time that's passed. We promise: no lectures, no shaming — just a plan to help, starting wherever you are.

Fear of the Unknown

Not knowing what's going to happen is its own kind of stress. We talk you through every step before it happens, so there are no surprises in the chair.

Specific Triggers

Needles, the sound of the drill, gagging, or certain smells. When we know your particular trigger, we can plan around it — sometimes that's all it takes to make a visit feel doable.

How We Help Nervous Patients at Epsom Smiles

There's no single trick to it — just a lot of small things that, together, make the chair feel safe. We adapt to you, not the other way around, and we never rush a nervous patient through the door.

  • A no-treatment first visit, if you'd prefer. Your first appointment can be just a conversation and a gentle look. We get to know each other, you tell us your worries, and we agree a plan together — nothing more happens until you're ready.
  • We explain everything before we do it. "Tell-show-do" — we tell you what's next, show you what it involves, and only then begin. No surprises, no sudden movements.
  • A stop signal that we always honour. Raise your hand and we pause, every time. Knowing you can stop the appointment at any moment is, for many people, the single biggest relief.
  • We go at your pace. Short appointments to begin with, breaks whenever you need them, and treatment broken into smaller steps if that feels easier. There's no clock-watching.
  • Gentle, modern numbing. Numbing gel before any injection, slow and careful technique, and plenty of time for it to work fully before we start. Comfort comes first.
  • Small comforts that help. Bring your headphones and your own music, ask questions freely, and let us know what helps you relax. Little things make a real difference.
  • A clear, honest plan — and clear costs. Once you're comfortable, we'll talk through any treatment you might want, in plain language, with transparent fees and payment plans if you'd like to spread the cost.

In pain right now but too anxious to call? Please don't suffer through it. Tell us it's an emergency and that you're nervous, and we'll be especially gentle — see our emergency dentist page, or just call and we'll talk you through it.

  • No Judgement — Ever

However long it's been or whatever state your teeth are in, you'll be met with kindness, not a lecture. We're here to help you forward.

  • Clear Pricing, No Pressure

You'll always know the cost before anything goes ahead, and you'll never be pushed into treatment. Our fees are fully transparent and finance is available when needed.

★★★★★
"I hadn't been to a dentist in nearly eight years because I was terrified. The team could not have been kinder — no judgement at all, everything explained, and they stopped whenever I needed. I've now been back three times without dreading it. I only wish I'd come sooner."

Nervous Patient FAQs

Not for a second. A long gap is one of the most common things we see, and it's almost always down to anxiety rather than neglect. There will be no lecture and no disapproval — just a friendly look at where things are and a plan to move forward at your pace. Most people tell us afterwards that the dread was far worse than the reality.

Absolutely. Many nervous patients start with a "meet and greet" visit — a conversation, a gentle look if you're comfortable, and a chance to ask anything you like. Nothing else happens unless and until you want it to. Simply tell us when you book that you'd prefer to start this way.

You can, at any time. We agree a simple stop signal before we begin — usually raising your hand — and we always honour it immediately. Knowing you're in control and can pause whenever you need to is, for most people, the thing that makes the biggest difference.

Fear of the needle is very common. We apply numbing gel first so the area is already numb before anything else, use a slow and gentle technique, and give the anaesthetic plenty of time to work fully before starting. We'll also talk you through each step so there are no surprises. Tell us it's your trigger and we'll plan the whole visit around it.

Not at all. Around half of UK adults feel some anxiety about the dentist, and about one in ten avoids care altogether because of it. It's an entirely normal, understandable response — often rooted in a past experience or a fear of pain. There's nothing silly about it, and choosing a practice that takes it seriously is a sensible step.

Our aim is for it not to. Modern numbing is far gentler and more reliable than it used to be, and a check-up itself involves no drilling and no pain. If you do need treatment, we make sure you're fully numb first and we stop the moment anything feels uncomfortable. You set the limit, not us.

Yes — bring a partner, friend, or family member if it helps you feel more at ease. Many nervous patients find it reassuring to have a familiar face nearby, and we're happy to accommodate that.

You don't have to call if that feels like too much. You can book online or email us at enquiries@epsomsmilesdental.co.uk and mention that you're a nervous patient. We'll take it from there gently, and you can tell us as much or as little as you like up front.

Take the First Small Step —
